Town mayor arrested in anti-mafia op. Eight nabbed for abuse of office

The center-right mayor of the Genoa-area town of Lavagna was arrested Monday in a police crackdown on illegal waste trafficking by alleged affiliates of the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta mafia. Mayor Giuseppe Sanguineti is under house arrest, as is center-right councillor Massimo Talerico. The latter is in charge of public property.
They are accused of abuse of office and are under investigation for vote-buying and influence-peddling.
A total of eight people were arrested in the operation.
